Our medical team traveled to Haiti, (the poorest country in this hemisphere) on Feb 2nd - 5th, 2009 on a medical fact-finding mission to assess the needs of the village of Jonc Dodin and surrounding areas.. During a 2 day screening clinic some of their pressing medical needs became apparent. Hypertension and many of its coexisting conditions appeared rampant. The need for access and distribution of routine pharmaceutical products and first line hypertensive medications were among the most urgent needs. Cataracts among the elderly, as well as traumatic cataracts among the younger population, were prevalent.
Children were in need of routine cold and fever medicine as well antibiotics for ear infections. Asthma seemed to be very common as well. The need for rescue inhalers, and long-term bronchodilators would be very useful among these people. There were many other everyday items that would seem common place to us in America (toothbrushes and tooth paste, children's vitamins with fluoride) that would make a life time difference to the Haitians.
Healing for Haiti Ministries is attempting to address and solve many of those problems over the coming months. Ground has been broken for a Medical Clinic in the village of Jonc Dodin. Medical teams with Medical doctors, Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, and Anesthesia personnel are being assembled. We hope that you will pray for us and our future success in this most important mission
